I think you’re forgetting birtherism was a thing. 

Kicking off with a “Shit, what do I have to lose? I’ll build my brand and maybe I can launch a right wing TV network” and then sticking with the same strategy because it actually worked on voters and eating up the news cycle isn’t exactly ballsy.
