You just need to feather the throttle a bit to start in 3rd, even 4th sometimes. In my old Celica (1979) I would start out in 2nd all the time when driving in snow , worked like a charm.

Plus safer slowing/stopping in slippery conditions.

Fun movie to watch for the effects, a throwback to the Saturday afternoon matinee. Acting was passable ( except for the daughter she was kind of flat).
