My parents are going, and I'm an only child. I'd never hear the end of it. I plan to bring vodka.

May I suggest you make a clean break. Some people just don't need to be in your life.
Half of them were on welfare for a few years when I was younger, too. So their being against social programs is truly mystifying to me.
Bless your heart.
TEAM ALL DELICIOUS FOOD IS THE BEST TEAM.
Tomorrow I spend the holiday with my entire extended family, all of whom recently shared this on facebook:
A cubic yard of pie and ice cream is a happy story, not a horror story.
Wow. That is some egregious shit.
About 6 years ago, the bookstore I was working at was ordered to be open on Thanksgiving for the first time by the head office. My bosses and managers decided to ask for volunteers rather than simply schedule them to work. I volunteered, and had no problem doing so. I've never been close with my extended family, and…
I catered someone's Thanksgiving once, but I volunteered, got paid $45/hr and got a $100 tip so I can't really complain!
Yes. I am middle manager. Hear me slump.
I told my boss (department store) I was free to work tomorrow. The shift doesn't start until 6 and it's just me, my parents, an aunt and my not-quite-there grandma and we always eat the big meal early anyway. Nobody's all that outraged since my dad works in a hospital and has to work Christmas this year.
when I was in high school I worked at Safeway and worked Thanksgiving. Triple-time-and-a-half boyyeeeee! I didn't mind because we closed at 6pm and I worked a double. STRAIGHT CASH HOMEY.
Did he also claim that it's labor law? Mine does all the time. He's basically saying, "I could be a normal, nice boss, but I choose not to. Here's something to back me up for being a dick."
I'm not working tomorrow but I'm still at work even though we're supposed to close at 1. AND IT'S MY BIRTHDAY. I have to go to the Verizon store after work then go home and clean my apartment before 3 when my friends show up. UGH.
I'm not working this year, but my little brother is. He just found out yesterday and when he called my mom she cried for like 10 minutes. This is the first time we're not gonna be together, and I feel terrible thinking about my brother sitting alone in his apartment on Thanksgiving. And I miss him.
In answer to your question, no we don't celebrate Australia Day here in the U.S. either.
As a group, Americans are much bigger fans of gluttonous eating than social justice or self-reflection...
I worked on Thanksgiving for years when I was working at a movie theater. Almost all movie theaters are open 365 days a year. Almost all of their employees also work for minimum wage under conditions that were just as (if not more) hellish than when I worked in retail.
What this lady did sucks, but I'm kinda annoyed that she got banned faster than the Roastbusters did.
