As far as litter: a covered box with a laaaaarge litter mat on the outside will save a lot of the hassle of thrown litter. We use crystal litter after finding that it is the least smelly (though it isn’t cheap) and also use a bamboo charcoal air filter on the outside of the box.

I never use a boxed mix because (and I know this is a travesty) I HATE most frosting. If you’re covering something in frosting, no one will know its a boxed mix. If you aren’t, its really obvious. I am, however, a devotee of boxed brownie mix. I’ve never had a homemade one that was near as good.
