I would give just about anything for the Democrats just that once to have taken the low road and blatantly appealed to the Republican base.

The only self-identifying “centrists” I know are quick to say “right, left: they’re all crooks,” and equally quick to post a “CROOKED HILLARY” meme, or some random evil “fact” about Nancy Pelosi. Not a word about our unhinged Tweeter-in-Chief and his daily mayhem.
Always nice to have someone let us know the exact point their history class got up to before they completely checked out.
I grew up in a household with adults who claimed to be centrists. Of course their version of centrist was religious right with the understanding that most politicians are evil monsters and the end times are coming so it doesn’t matter.
Dinesh D’Souza reads and comments on Splinter articles?
Obama was a left-wing republican, and pursued (with the exception of a handful of socially progressive issues) a very similar agenda to Bush.
Obama ran as a progressive and spoke like one when he was president. His policies were “centrist” because he was a spineless hack.
A) HRC called them “deplorables” for what they were explicitly endorsing, not for being insufficiently liberal.
B) He’s not wrong about a huge number of voters. Neither are you regarding beating them over the head with it, but to pretend they aren’t what they absolutely are is also probably not a great look.
“If only Democrats would have stuck with their original ideals; like Jim Crow and segregation.”
This is grade school level revisionism
So when the people in the two parties literally switched their labels because of race-related policy, and because no one alive today was a Democrat in the 1860s - you think those principles still define the Democratic party of today how?
How’s the old strategy been working for you, Democrats?
Centrism also gets you the party that can’t muster the political capital to overcome Joe fucking Lieberman. Equally embarrassing when he’s a monster of their own making.
Eh, I used to be much the same, but the GOP has become something I cannot identify with anymore. Their “economic conservatism” = “we’re going to ride this train ‘til the wheels fall off, so all you poors try not to get hit by the falling wheels! Or don’t! Whatever. YOLO!”
Versus what we have now? Look, I would love if both parties came together and realized, “hey, neither of us is going to get everything that we want, so let’s compromise,” but one specific party has been clear that they’re not playing that game.
Centrism ceased to exist the moment a black man was sworn in as President of the United States.
Centrism gets you Joe Lieberman killing the public option, which was an enormous missed opportunity for the Democrats. At this point their motto should be “The Party of Missed Opportunity.”
It’s been split in two for a long long time. The only uniting feature is that the red and the blue both like to make money. It’s just they do this in different ways.
It’s been a long conservative con. By definition, conservatives try to keep systematic things in place all the while ignoring the classist, racist and oppressive roots of how institutions from top to bottom have been set up throughout this country’s history. You can either choose to chug the Kool Aid that everything…
The prevailing Democratic strategy does not work.
