That aspect arguably became better when the show got less political. Stan's basic character is he's so upright he's made it weird. By contrast, Francine (who was originally meant to be a blonde Republican sex-kitten) was super weird but acted like that was normal. It made her hilariously unpredictable.

I think I'm in the minority, but I even thought Reggie the Koala was funny.

Holy shit Tearjerker killed me. The whole "Oscar Gold" bit is genius.

Oh God that episode is classic. My favorite bit was Hayley and Jeff assembling the sex swing. "We should have just had the guy at the store assemble it for us."

"You two should talk. Why don't I go find your pants?"

My favorite black comedy was the reveal of one of Stan's tricks (written by David Mamet, because of course) and Hayley's shock that she prostituted herself for nothing. "I…DID THINGS…"

Francine has to be one of the funniest female characters in animation. "Bartender here mistook me for Samuel L. Jackson once and I just never corrected him."

All time favorite American Dad one-liner is when Stan confronts God to save his family in the Christmas episode. "Stan, you're holding a gun to the head of God. I mean, I don't even have a metaphor for that."

Sheesh didn't think THAT would be super relevant right now.

I think that was the biggest disappointment: endless possibilities, and then they end on a trite Jesus analogue and a lot of punching like so many other action films.

Not THAT baffling, considering he looks like a Simpsons character brought to life.
