Those look like really beefy Tarantula Hawk Wasps. Just come down to San Antonio, TX and you can see swarms of them in the summer.

Excellent news! I’ve enjoyed the viewings that the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin has had of this film. It’s a total riot. Looking forward to throwing my money at this to get myself a copy.
