According to the creepy Amazon ads attached to this, the starter pack costs $100 and expansion packs run $15-$30/each?! This better be a fucking great game to justify that kind of scratch. They did. There was a big patch to fix that, but they still feel wonky.

You hit the nail on the head. You can essentially access every level on foot in one go and it all feels like every place transitions very well into each other. Maybe because Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne were all directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and on Dark Souls 2 he only served as the creative consultant? To me, Dark Souls 2 doesn't have the atmosphere or sense of impending doom as the other three.

Bloodborne is on par with Dark Souls. The combat is so much different, though, that is it hard to truly compare. Dark Souls 2 IS the easiest out of the bunch, but it's still a hard game.
