Can we have a category for honorable mentions here?

I’m an urban (Chicago) cyclist who rides to work roughly half the time, but other than owning a bike and knowing how to ride it (and lock it up), I’m really naive about cycling - I picked a bike recommended to me from a local bike shop, but I couldn’t for the life of me tell you how my bike is better or worse than

Actually, as far as garment manufacturing goes, China’s actually a relatively high-paying country with better labor standards than say, Bangladesh or a number of other countries.

Right, except the post I was replying to said “the first two have practical uses,” meaning the hood ornament and the umbrella. My point was that although it might be beneficial to have a hood ornament that’s harder to steal, there is no practical use of a hood ornament of any kind. It’s, by definition, ornamentation.

I’ve been thinking about all the tech going into cars these days, and how technology generally equalizes functionality: Vertu would sell you a $12k phone, but it wouldn’t work as well as a $650 iPhone. (Yes, $650 is more than some people can afford on a phone, but it’s also within the reach of most of the middle class

What’s the practical use of a hood ornament? It’s literally an option on a Rolls. You can choose to have the ornament, or just get a flat piece of metal that doesn’t obstruct your your chauffeur’s vision or introduce drag.

The electric light bulb might not have been subsidized, but electric companies certainly were, receiving what were essentially monopoly licenses from various state and local governments to install wiring (and often, exclusive permission to use public rights of way to do so for little or no money).

Even if that’s true it wouldn’t mean that shutting down Stranger Things or whatever would be a good business decision. A lot of the “Adam Sandler crap” comes in movie form, and you watch a movie then are done.

That may be true, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the incentive is well designed, or that it’s the best use of whatever pool of money the incentive provides.

The problem is that the way we’re designing the subsidies, almost all of the middle class benefits from the way we subsidize fossil fuels, but the credits to EVs flow almost entirely to the wealthy.

In the United States, you are under obligation to pay NO taxes whatsoever at any point in time. You pay taxes as a result of things that you CHOOSE do - earning income, buying retail items, owning property. You are under no obligation to do any of those things, or anything else that would cause you to be taxed.

The better way of putting it, I think, is that the phrase “taxpayer” is biased. Congress shouldn’t work for taxpayers, it should work for citizens.

I’ve never entirely bought on to the “MLS is a pyramid scheme” arguments, but if the Crew are allowed to move, I’d say that’s pretty clear evidence that the MLS isn’t actively trying to build a long-term business.

There’s literally nothing there designed to appeal to millennials, or anyone who wasn’t already inclined to buy a Harley.

Millennial in Chicago here. My primary hands-on experience with the H-D brand came from my ex’s dad; I can kind of appreciate the machines now. But in practice, a lot of the experience came from me going to the Harley Davidson store off of Michigan Avenue, and, frankly, based on the clientele that came in, I don’t

Speaking of which, where’s the Honda Fit Type R?

Honestly, based on the number of Evoques I see driving around (there’s 2 on my block, and I don’t even live in a particularly wealthy area), a lot of people will buy these. I can’t remember the last time that I saw someone in a Land Rover that didn’t look like it wasn’t heading to or from soccer practice or stuck in

Someone on my block has a 1992? Geo Tracker (actually a rebadged Suzuki Sidekick, as a lot of people here have pointed out), and frankly, it really looks like a fun 4x4.

Press one button, release, then another, release, then hold a third? Jeez, why not just make people do the Konami code?

Can this be the time where we say that as much as we laud the “diversity” of the United States as a country and the USMNT as a team, that we need to do a much better job recruiting Latino talent in this country?
