I know someone who “moved” to Alabama so that she could get divorced immediately and then “moved” back to NC. But she also didn’t have kids and was on her third marriage at age 23, so… yeah.

I’m leaning towards your Postscript. (Though I have a line on a sub-$1000 Subaru Outback that needs a little work and should carry me through the end of the year, when the fiscal situation should be much better; A gearhead friend is trying to convince me to buy her 1999 Nissan Quest for $2000, but I’m worried about

She’s intimated in the past that she would pound me into the ground with legal filings and made not-so-veiled threats about my custody of the kids at the mere mention of alimony and child support.

NC requires 366 consecutive days of separate habitation before filing. Buying made more sense than renting in this market. A cancer diagnosis at 358 days led to my ex going from “damn your feelings, all ahead flank speed!” to “I can’t deal with this, right now.” We’re still in the middle of filing, right now.

Funny thing is: in order to get to that level of savings, I need to get to work.

The E39 is 15 years old and less reliable by the second. It’s stranded me a few times and, being a responsible adult, between the distant job and my kids, that can’t happen again. Getting to and fro, safely, cleanly and in a way that doesn’t embarrass me with documentary subjects is key.

Are you the guy from the article?

The 5er was getting 22mpg during the commutes between Durham and Cary (for all of 7 days). I think it was actually getting better mileage, as it’ll do 35mpg highway, in 6th. Downhill. With a tailwind. But since this round of ‘why did I buy a BMW V8!?’ I don’t trust it enough to drive it to work. (I’m borrowing a

I have an honest-to-god race car sitting in my driveway (it’s my avatar). I don’t need a ‘play’ car, nor did I ask for one.

My new job involves a 25 mile, 40-minute commute each way, so fuel economy is important. I’d also like something that can haul my two kids (7 and 10), two dogs, camera equipment, etc, but isn’t an SUV. (I’m definitely open to wagons). A back seat that can fit two adult humans (with legs attached). A manual

I’m guessing he’s paid someone else 5 times to fix the BMW and doesn’t want to pay them a 6th time.
