A season runs for a set period of time, usually 3 or 4 months. You create brand new characters for them and try to level them up as much as possible before the season ends. It replaces the “ladder” functionality from D2.

When I was in Little League our team won the first game of the 8 team tournament that was the beginning of the LLWS (like if we won that tourney we went to regionals for our state, and then if we won regionals we’d go to the state tourney, and if we won that we’d represent our state at the LLWS).
