There was some PBS docuseries a long ass time ago that vaguely resembled a reality show called An American Family. I’ve heard it referenced as the first but it came out in 1973, which is over 30 years. Who knows which one is being referred to in this article.

I see your point. I don’t know if I heard that he’s said that but it honestly doesn’t surprise me at all.
