I’m ALWAYS rooting for NA in eSports, but I think even if Liquid didn’t choke, it’d still be a complete shutout in grand finals in Na’Vi’s favor. It’s good that they made progress, and I think it motivates the rest of NA to fix the problems they’re having and step up the region’s game. Read more

This was a wise decision by both teams. Misery has never been an all star achiever as Universe has been in my opinion, and the inconsistent play from W33 makes it difficult to trust that he will pull out the stops when necessary a second time, as he is a very selfish and thick headed player. W33 is often praised for Read more

Yeah but I still can’t root for them because JW always seems like a colossal asshole manchild. Olof is pretty great though.

Korea has significantly better infrastructure for esports/pro gaming since they’ve been at it for nearly 20 years now. It’s easier to grow talent when you have a better ecosystem to develop it. The solution is for every region to develop their own infrastructure and develop their own talent as well, but it’s usually Read more

This seems similar to the “neutral zone trap” style of play used (in)famously by the New Jersey Devils in the 90's. Never about flashy plays, effective as all get out, boring as hell to watch.

Yeah, bit of hyperbole.

The Friday night death slot is only such for TV shows that depend on ratings to draw in advertising dollars. E-Sports is incredibly, incredibly niche, not to mention the fact that the financial investment on the part of TBS is minuscule compared to them having to create their own show from the Read more

I really hope the numbers for Rocket League keep growing, because that’s the esport ESPN should be looking into fostering.

It will probably mean a lot for the move towards the mainstream of eSports that they will carry a tournament of a game with mainstream appeal. While MOBAs are incredibly popular among gamers, they are very dense and extremely difficult to watch without also being a MOBA player. Even watching the Newbie stream of The Read more

As someone who used to compete at a very high level on the early e-sport scene back in the days of unreal tournament, quake and counter strike, I can’t endorse Halo and it’s lack of skill as a valid e-sport. There is absolutely not a single thing about the Halo system that makes it a skill based first person shooter.

Halo was ruined after Reach era when they introduced the killstreak rewards mimmicking Call of Duty. It completely threw balance out the window worse than before. And not to mention the shotgun has always been overpowered in Halo games since the beginning. Unless they significantly adjust weapon balance and make Read more

Of course the developers should have more control over tournaments for their own games. You can’t make a direct correlation between traditional sports and esports in terms of the players leverage. In athletics the teams have a de facto monoply since players want to play for the highest compensation possible and the Read more

What’s the difference between an “esport” and a video game?

Honestly, reading about “e-sports” (please, call them something else) it strikes VERY similar to the early days of most major sports & leagues. Especially this feels similar to the 1890-1920(ish) baseball with the barnstorming & gambling.

This is all the more reason in the United States for school districts to get involved a bring a local level of organization into eSports. Almost all have athletic departments that deal with many of these issues. The High School Star League has been a great start in helping formalize school level eSports. The children Read more
