To protect all involved, let’s call the guy “Lara.” He married my cousin’s husband’s sister, and he was from some place about 5 hours south of Juárez—were my family is from—past the state’s capital, Chihuahua City. I saw him at family gatherings, he was nice enough, and impossible to forget. He was stout at around Read more

I did. I thought his size advantage would cause Alvarez problems. I was clearly wrong in overestimating Chavez Jr.’s desire.

Thanks for reading and yes, he is a star. I went to his public training for the Liam Smith fight, held at a hotel. Place was packed plus all the Mexican hotel workers went to watch him, essentially, throw a few punches. Overall, I agree with you. But I will say that an argument can be made that GGG has not fought same competition as Canelo because he’s been avoided while boxers as lowly as Charles Hatley have called out Canelo. Also, GGG has something like 350 amateur fights, which is a lot and bound to eventually catch up to a 35 year old boxer. Maybe that time is now, or maybe, Canelo is just not the boxer to expose him. I don’t see anyone marketed like Canelo. But as far as pure talent, I like Gilberto Ramirez and David Benavidez, who is Mexican American. Misael Rodriguez has a certain amount of appeal since he won a silver in the last Olympics, but he needs a lot of work. Read more
