HD-DVD failed because it was not DRM encumbered enough. The studio's decided to follow the path of Sony over a superior technology was far more important.

Sony refused to lose and spent a ridiculous amount of money bribing the studios (money they haven't made back as of yet and a debt that drags on the company as a whole0 - as the last format war between Sony's BetaMax and JVC's VHS embittered them quite a lot.

Agreed. Had Microsoft put a HD-DVD drive into the Xbox 360, the format may well have stood a fighting chance.
