Your example of living beyond ones means is relatable to a lot of people and illustrates a common problem. What if the comparison was $100k and $1? or 1 cent? Have you walked past a penny and not bothered to pick it up? The absolute level of money affects how you treat it, and that is whats wrong with her statement.

Though, I guess it depends on what your measure of rich is, and the time frame you are looking at, vocational school or community college may not be far behind in the initial salary but it diminishes future earnings prospects.
