It is possible to be deeply concerned about disability-based abortion, while also respecting the right of individual women and families to choose whether and when to have a baby.
If we classify elective abortions separately just because they're elective, we give anti-choicers ammunition in condemning them on moral grounds that shouldn't be a concern anyway. Miscarriages (spontaneous abortions) happen often and will always happen. Elective abortions should be accepted by society just as readily.
My sister's friend had seven abortions working at home for Google!!! Click to learn more!!!
Uh, Down's is MUCH different than a painful, terminal neurological condition that would cause the baby to suffer for its few days/months/years on earth before it eventually dies of it. It sounds like Davis' fetus' condition was awful and would eventually be fatal.
I also work for a disability organization and I maintain that this is a problem that stems from the systemic injustices/prejudices about people with disabilities. I know a lot of PWDs (people w/ disabilities) who are pro-life, which is definitely not my stance, but I can empathize with the position of feeling devalued…
If there really is someone who had 7 abortions please don't stop her from having more. Doesn't it occur to the pearl clutching anti-abortionists that someone that ignorant shouldn't be raising a child? If someone is so stupid as to choose to have abortions rather than take a pill or have a IUD implanted, no one…
I appreciate her honesty and bravery for making this public. Women need to share their stories so that the stigma goes away.
I recently terminated a 22 week pregnancy. I suffered a partial abruption and as a result blood/oxygen flow to the baby was diminished. After several ultrasounds and a fetal MRI the doctors…
She should have all the abortions she wants. Are you going to raises her children? Do you think forcing a woman to raise a child she does not want is best for the kid? Why punish the baby?
Making this about myself for a second.
I used to work for a disability rights organization (this is relevant, I swear). The vast majority of people I knew there were sane lefties, with one exception - they can be really vocal and judgey about people who terminate pregnancies based on known abnormalities. On Facebook, there has already been some backlash…
If the nickname of that room is the rape room then yes, they definitely have a rape room.
While I agree that there's a difference between, "Asshat made a terrible joke and owner looked the other way" and "this is an actual room where people are sexuality assaulted" (from the headline I assumed there was a room that celebrated comics that showed women being assaulted), that she got fired for complaining…
Yes, that is where I worked. I worked in the Gloria Steinem counseling and liberation center.
Oh, you sweet summer child.
Agreed, completely and utterly agreed. It was a realisation I came to in high school after reading Reviving Ophelia and looking back at a childhood and adolescence full of physical abuse and verbal harassment. I was attracted to and dated other girls, so actually being perceived as a "gay boy" had nothing to do with…
If gay cultural history was mainstreamed in both public life and scholastically more then it is now, it would do so much to highlight the histrionic problems our society has not just with gay/trans/genderqueer sexuality and identification, but Femaleness. Not even feminism, femaleness. It's radioactive in its ability…
The first thing I can say is WOW, that's too much to go through at such a young age (and I say this for both yourself and your nieces), I think Its good that they're not that close to the toxicity that seems to emanate from your brother.
Your insistence that she is screaming "fuck your mouth" would give Dr. Freud serious indigestion. And an erection.
