Absolutely agree. Unfortunately, the terms wife/husband, girlfriend/boyfriend are very gendered. Just compare what it means to be "a good wife" and what it means to be "a good husband."

Having kids while in grad school hasn't been the greatest. But I still burn when I remember my grad school director shaking his head at me sadly and saying that I should put grad school "ahead of life like the other students."
I don't know if Morri implied a "thinly veiled insult." I read it as an affirmation that parents cannot be the only caregivers (indeed I doubt parents been the sole caregivers for more than a century give or take).
