I love how you turned a really cool story into a negative. Cause what this world needs is definitely more negativity.

So I’m super confused about the ‘white washing’ in the Death Note movie. I would get it if it took place in Japan, but since they changed the setting, names, etc, doesn’t that negate the white washing hysteria? For example, wasn’t The Magnificent Seven originally Seven Samurai, or is that also white washing but there…
This whitewashing bullshit is getting out of control.
Death Note is a bad example here. The Netflix version, as “meh” as the overall reaction has been is based in America using american subjects (albeit white americans). I could understand if it was located in Japan using some warped logic to defend white casting, but the mob was stangely quieter when Scorsese adapted…
The Death Note thing is ridiculous. Of course a character in an American movie who thinks he can take the law into his own hands after a being he views as divine gives him power has to be played by a white actor. Why else would you think his opponent is not only black but also dressed like an Antifa member?
Basically, the thought is that, because white roles are not suffering from under-representation, it’s okay to change those roles to fit demographics that are being under-represented, unless that character’s whiteness is intrinsic to the plot and who they are. I don’t necessarily agree—I think the creator/writer should…
Ya’ll still pissed about a white actor cast as a white kung fu hero, tho.
Ah yes... Lets bitch and moan about a movie only using some of the source material and none at all. Who really cares what skin color the actor or actress is in. That is not the point of them being on screen. The point of them being on screen is to convey the story that the screen writer is trying to send to the…
...so, by your logic, white actors/actresses shouldn’t be allowed to take a role that was originally envisioned as another ethnicity? Should that same logic also be applied to white roles that are filled by other ethnicities, or is that allowed because it’s a form of entertainment affirmative action?
I still question lumping in death note in with films like ghost in the shell.
Ghost in the Shell was a fair criticism, though it was taken to ridiculous heights. Doctor Strange would have been called racist either way and Death Note didn’t have whitewashing. Or if it did, it affected every character, which makes attacking the Light casting hypocritical.
THIS!! This right here!
Sure, we could say that... if it were even remotely accurate.
Thank you! Hell if Light was anything but white in this setting it wouldn’t work as Lights biggest advantage in the manga is his privilege. Nobody looks at him oddly (like they do L, a foreigner) because he’s a majority. For that too work in an American context he NEEDS to be White.
“It isn’t even the questions raised by the whitewashing controversy.”
The whole article feels biased towards hating it, and doesn’t offer anything positive to balance out the article. Pretty sure it’s another “I hate the white washing” but disguised as a movie critique. Not to mention where the f is the spoilers warning? Still watching this first thing when I get home, anything Dafoe…
The story doesn't sit well with me either. My family and I also entered legally, and got naturalized legally. The US has some really lax laws about illegal immigrants compared to any other developed country I can think of. Try doing this to become a citizen of England or Japan. This would never fly.
Yeah I agree and it's really messed up. Any other country in the world would kick you out immediately, but for some reason in the US we have to save the illegals. I have nothing personally against them, but do it the legal way. It's easy to run over the border, but my great grandparents came from Germany which would…
And to think - all you had to do was play video games, and remember to keep your receipts! HA HA!
Nice story and all, but things like this just don't sit well with me when my family entered legally and waited in line just like everyone else who immigrated legally. We paid our taxes just like we were told, we filled out our paperwork just like we were told, and we waited for years to finally get those passports.…
