Just a quick scan of these replies looks like the Merkur brand would be able to compete by itself. If safety razor votes were aggregated here, it definitely looks like they'd come on top. People are crazy about their safety razors - and understandably so!

Any safety razor has my vote, but as for specifics, I can only vote for the one that I've ever owned: a Lord L6. It's basically a cheaper Merkur with the same style head, but a longer thinner handle - doesn't feel cheap though.
