I was six years old when the first Star Wars movie came out, and my dad (being a pacifist), wouldn’t let me see it, probably because it had the word “War” in the title. He eventually caved and let me see it a year or so later. But his anti-violence stance carried on for years. I wasn’t allowed to have toy guns or war…
I have loved the Shadowrun universe for decades, now, and I held the same hopes that you do. My daughter wanted to see something like Artemis Fowl. We both got a heaping serving of blue-tinged bloody garbage. There were flashes of brilliant world-building, but this article’s review is pretty spot-on. It is not good. I…
I hope 2018 is less trying for you, Matt. All of your hard work has not gone unnoticed. On behalf of my fellow Gamelogerinos: thank you.
And a Thanksgiving new year!
Ever since I moved to the States, I haven’t ceased to be amazed by how big a deal Thanksgiving seems to be. You’re going to eat another turkey in a month, guys!
Me too. Still will probably watch it, despite all the stuff I’ve read that is mildly disconcerting. Probably something I put on in the background while I clean.
Got into a pleasant shadowrun chat the last time an article was posted about this movie. That’s also why I was looking forward to it and will still watch it (with lowered expectations). The idea of a Rogan cameo nearly made me drop it completely, but I expect I’ll still see it.
So ... it’s a Shadowrun movie, as written by a 16-year-old gamer bro who just discovered the existence of racism?
Hooray! The Keyboard Geniuses ‘Year In Review’ is always one of my favorite features. Thanks for keeping it going, even with all of the changes to the AV Club in 2017. And thanks, of course, for all of the extraordinary work y’all do writing these articles for us to consume :)
You’re both right, now stop fighting.
A long time ago a buddy of mine noted that most TV sitcoms relied on insult-humor for jokes. (Think of ‘Friends’ - the number of jokes, which are a an alleged zinger at another person’s expense is truly enormous.)
This was an astonishingly good year for video games, if not always the culture around them. The best games were confident, experimental, thoughtful, surprising, and entirely sincere. Wolfenstein II had a deranged vision about the horrors of American Nazism and what was needed to fight it, but it was also one it fully…
Has Kelly never heard the phrase, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”? Has she never cracked open a history book? I mean, it was painfully obvious that her attempts to fix her mistake would be a resounding failure, and she has thousands of years of human history to demonstrate why.
I wonder if the episode that got cut from the season was supposed to be the actual finale because this did not feel like a finale at all.
I am the Steward of Sentimental Detritus in our family. When my Mom passed away a couple of years ago I allowed one year of storage at my house for the things not immediately claimed that might want to be claimed for sentimental value (lord knows, my Mom was hoarder of ‘collections’ of crap). I put out a couple of…
A+ and a dash of jealousy for your invention of the phrase “Steward of Sentimental Family Detritus.”
I feel your pain- my mom died suddenly this summer and now, in my 900 square foot house, I have to house a crapload of Important Things, including two dining tables that seat 20+ people EACH, because there’s no one else to take this stuff and I can’t bear to get rid of it.
Thank you for this comment, I think what you wrote represents what the press was most concerned about - the lack of context. The only reason I can come up with for why marketing decided to release this segment of the game as a trailer is for its shock value, and to generate conversation/controversy.
I love me some Gaby Hoffmamn when she shows restraint and I thought he performance in this series of episodes was wonderfully restrained - she could have been all over the place here, yet she wasnt -she held back. Maybe some of the best performances of her career here IMO. Kudos.
