I didn't watch the show in its original run. Once I got interested, I binged with the aid of DVD's from Netflix.
Season 3: Xander came to rescue Giles from Angel, after Dru had used her mind-clouding powers to appear as Jenny & extract the secret of Acatla (spelling?). Giles had also been tortured so he was feeling pretty groggy. He asked Xander if he was just imagining him.
We are all free to consume a show in weekly portions. Just watch one episode, contemplate it & tune in next week. (Well, we don't get to gather in home room the next morning & discuss it with all our pals.)
We'd really appreciate his Stevedore Skills….
