Why do movies have to “say” something? Isn’t it enough to be a well constructed, entertaining way to spend 2 hours and then you can dispose of it afterwards?

That is exactly what’s happening here, yes. The arguments being made against it are forced at best.
Pretty much. Same as with the luddite movement in the early industrial revolution. That is those were all people angry about losing out to changing tech that left them financially impacted (and being 1800's England, that usually meant starving or a poor house).
It truly amazes me that this is the stance people are taking. Taking shortcuts in art is nothing new: What about poser/Daz? What about games that use the Unity Asset Store? What about IRAY (which is AI enhanced rendering)? What about using Content Aware Fill in photoshop? Filters that create all sort of things you…
And sadly, many will dub you a philistine for your opinion. Though I agree with your latter statement.
Why is this a problem? There is no need to “art” any more than there is a need to know how to make a basket, and yet people still know how to make baskets.
Are we really having a “They took our jobs” with Ai and artist? I don’t see the problem. If a piece of art moves me in someway, I don’t really care who or what the artist is.
But didn’t you know, Avatar is the first film ever to borrow story beats or themes from another work? 🙄
everyone needs to grow up and do a lot more “my Dad said!” approach to evaluating movies
You’re literally ranting in an internet comment section under a comic book character’s name about how big and adult you are for thinking adults can only enjoy realism in art, all because daddy says so.
Children? You’re the one going on about what your daddy said, like he’s some authority that we should all listen to, that’s what children do. Yes, yes, I’m sure your dad can beat up my dad. I have no interest in Avatar, but not because anything your daddy said, he’s not the boss of me.
The only people who get that mad about positive reviews for art they haven't seen are people who think their taste in art is a personality.
Adults put very little stock into other adults telling them what is appropriate entertainment for adults. I pay my mortage, I can watch exactly as many blue cat people movies as I want.
Mad Max Fury Road is basically a two hour action movie interrupted by brief bits of dialogue, and remained exhilarating start to finish.
It can be (i.e. every Bay Transformers movie), but it worked for two of the Lord of the Rings movies, Endgame and arguably Aliens (though its more several interlocking set pieces running one into the next).
why would this movie be embarrassing for him?
“It looks like a 13-year-old movie.”
I feel like we’re looking at different trailers. I went and saw Avatar 1 when it was back in theaters and they had a scene from Avatar 2 at the end and the CGI was pretty nuts, as were the water effects.
Fuck it, I’m excited for this.
Seems pretty on-brand for 2022 AV Club. Seems like the only people they employ are either zoomer English majors or Sam Fartsanti.
I fear for your sanity when they, inevitably, add a Pulitzer for slideshows.
