You mean you can have character development outside of the main plot? On a TV show? Honestly, how can they expect the audience to keep it all balanced in their addled simple brains?

Heh — was just watching Beckett’s Endgame yesterday.

(Sorry, that’s not Matthew Sweet — he was the interviewer. The poet was/is Iain Sinclair, and the line was “You cease to know yourself when the things that are around you don’t recognize you.”)

It also sounds a like a version of something the Welsh poet Matthew Sweet said about place and space. He’s said something like you don’t really ever forget a place, the objects forget you, and that’s when you know you don’t belong there anymore.

That’s why I said if the book is in a language the humans can’t understand, or is otherwise enchanted or cursed or something, it probably doesn’t matter.
