I replied to this up thread, but car phone technology was available in the 1940's on a limited basis. Government and really rich people have access and New York was a big enough city it would have been available.

Actually car phones have been available since the 1940's they were just not common. I had to take a class about wireless in college and I was really suprised at how early some of the technologies were available if you were rich enough or in the government/emergency services.

I spent part of my youth in PNG and these stupid things were everywhere. They are a menace and gross, especially if you accidently step on one. Plus there were about 100x more of them those cute tropical treefrogs which were so much nicer. The only thing worse then the cane toads were the snakes.

Brian Staveley: The Emperorer's Blades Book 2: The Providence of Fire. I read the first book last year and I really enjoyed it. I just read book 2 this weekend. I really love epic fantasy and this book is nice and detailed and also not just a Tolkien clone.
