N55 does have a recall on it for the bolts on the VANOS- they come lose over time... but it's covered by BMW, so not that major.

Based on my experience, you'd definitely hear things getting f'd up while the motor destroyed itself, but it's possible it broke completely free. Or it's an entirely different electrical issue.
When you first hit the power window button was there a snap and some noises before it eventually stopped doing anything? If so, you're probably wrecked the regulator. If you resisted the urge to keep hitting the button, you might be able to fix it with a cheap clip.
