Built in 1888, the Nerobergbahn in Wiesbaden, Germany uses water ballast as propulsion. A tank in the car is filled with up to 7K liters of water in the upper car to allow it to tow the lower car up. At the end of the trip the water is released into the viaduct and the system cycles up and down.
