Jim Cobb is one of the best editors I ever worked for. He's a journalism treasure. Norman, Jim and the gang are all special people. I know there will still be auto coverage in the Times, but an era comes to an end.

Now that you've lived in NYC for (a year?), do you look at cars in any different way?

I loved that episode, and I also liked the one with Gad Elmaleh. I can't resist the idea of driving a 1950 2CV around NYC!

Why it works for me 1) spectacular shots of coffee. 2) spectacular shots of New York that make me miss New York. 3) Jerry doesn't just go for fancy cars. He brings back some that you'd forgotten about, like the Pacer. 4) He actually converses with the guests, rather than set up bits.

The most valuable thing I was ever given was an actual Ford Racing jacket made out of Kevlar. Someone at the Salvation Army store got a treasure.

No one is taking Patrick seriously, right? If you worked for me and took a tablet, I'd tell you to send it back, and then you'd be fired.

I met Senna, and he was as charismatic and charming in person as you see in the movie. I will never forget the jolt of hearing that he died. In those days, there was no Twitter or Facebook, which would have shared it instantly, and I'm not sure if there was ESPN yet. But it made CNN, which broadcast the news that Read more

I did some work for The Economist about Texas, and the difference between California and Texas is stunning. There's no state personal income tax, and corporations are taxed at a rate of 0.5% to 1% (you can get that waved depending on the deal you get from the state). Much of the U.S. population is within 500 miles of Read more

Thanks, Zac, for the mention, and thanks everybody, for suggesting a "relatively" in front of easy. No, it is doesn't compare with the ease of cars of today, but compared with driving a horse and buggy or a wagon with a team, it was much simpler.

So as a Jalopnik Dame, or at least a Jalopnik Dame Emeritus, here's my thought. Once something like this happens, you lose control of the narrative. The Washington pundits and Jon Stewart and the editorial boards get a hold of the story, and your message goes out the window. Doesn't matter how good the legal case is, Read more

Nobody on board was injured because a) the plane was at a slow rate of speed; b) the wing clipped the building c) everyone would have been strapped into their seats, the crew included. Read more

They can't call it the Volt and "murder" Tesla. The two brand names have completely different values. It would be a good idea for GM to create a new brand, if it's really going to try this.

There isn't any mechanism to remove him. He hasn't been charged by the police, and his term runs until next year.

I made the mistake of passing a streetcar once in Toronto, and I will never, ever do it again. People honked and yelled and I considered heading straight for the border to get away from their wrath.
