I am genuinely curious as to what digital card game was the first “wildly successful” one then.

It doesn’t read to me as “punishing players for playing imperfectly,” but rather adding a level of tension and difficulty to gameplay by making your actions / decisions matter more. Is it a sort of superficial level of tension? Yeah, probably...but I think it is an interesting concept.
