It’s the kind of usage that makes any reasonably well educated person cringe inside. And I’ve never encountered a male who referred to women as “females” who wasn’t an idiot misogynist.
Because studies like ones that say men spend more time doing paid work than women and that women spend more time doing housework than men almost always lead to misleading headlines—like the ones I linked above.

As I just fleshed out in one of last comments: It also punches down. Because women are forced to assume a disproportionate amount of responsibility for the outcome of sex that can lead to pregnancy. It’s funny if you’re a guy. It’s not funny if you live with the anxiety that pregnancy actually represents.
I don’t think the problem is that it’s unfunny, but what it implies.
