I suspect, the deposits were taken to help pay and hopefully ramp up production.  I mean there WAS a real car 2 I think.  They very well might have mismanaged funds, or didn’t fully understand just how expensive getting up to actual production was going to be.

Well me general if rambling point what that simple shit in government contract is almost always wildly marked up for no other reason that to get to keep some of that sweet sweet money.

I am sure it was above and beyond other auto makers in period. I know now, not personally, that you get tons of little trinket and collectables especially with the rarer models.
