As an atheist who sees this as a great piece of art and not some sacred relic. So what?

(SPOILERS)

You shouldn’t. Regardless of his abilities of being a film creator, as a consumer of art he has a track record of excellent taste. This is a guy who could talk your ear off about the works of Kurosawa, Ford, Leone, etc. If he likes your movie, that’s definitely a compliment.
