It's actually due to Peter Dinklage's mutant power. You see he possesses such superhuman levels of cool, he warps movie history around himself. If you go back and look at the previous X-men movies you'll find he's now in those too, stealing every scene.

I think it's going a little far to call the reasons "painfully obvious." The value seems to be partially aesthetic (your point about the 10' framed) and partially historical (your point about the "one in existence" and the above discussion about Billy The Kid).
