Oh, I missed that the first read through; you're right.

Is anyone else confused about the Wi-Fi on these things? Are they just creating a local network so that people can talk to each other? Or are they creating a gateway to the internet? If so: how are they getting to the rest of the internet? It seems pretty clear that these places don't have an existing internet

Yeah, but you don't know that the SFTP/SSH ports on those machines haven't been turned off since no one legitimately needs to access/update them at the moment. They're not invulnerable to attack, but they are certainly less vulnerable to attack.

It's sad that federal agencies, like NASA, have to shut down their websites during the shutdown; but it really does need to be done. First of all, you don't want to leave these websites (which are attacked regularly) up with no one to handle any security problems. Second, and perhaps more importantly, the last thing a

beat me to it

Woops, I misread your post. Nevermind, I agree.

If you think the space program is "overfunded", come on down to a NASA center; we'll be happy to dispel those misconceptions.

I'm not scoffing at it; I'm just keeping in context that this technology has been MUCH more difficult to develop than anyone thought it was going to be in the late 60's. I know this article isn't a great example, because it's based off laser confinement where ITER (and DEMO?) are both magnetic confinement; but when

Fusion power is something of a running joke in science and engineering circles. Don't get me wrong, it's a sound theory and it's going to become and engineering reality eventually. Fusion power has been about '10 years away' since the late 1960's.

If ITER works and IF DEMO goes forward as scheduled, great! If not, I

Nah, by the time we actually get fusion working Earth will have been totally out of fossil fuels for 50 years.

An article? No that's the point at which they release an industrial fusion reactor, then sit back and wait for the dump trucks to start delivering money and Nobel Prizes.

That was my initial reaction too; but then I actually read the article. It doesn't say that the NIF broke even on total energy going into the experiment; they broke even on the amount of energy going into and out of the hydrogen pellet. So, huge amounts of energy going into the lasers, some small percentage of that

A witch! Call the Inquisition!

Dear HBO,

Here's the deal: I am happy to wait until the END of a season (maybe even a couple weeks after) to have paid access to the shows your members gets as soon as they air . f you make those episodes available on Amazon or Google Play; you can expect me to pay a good price for them (like $3-$4/episode, this is

Switzerland?

Lol, needs spinners for those rims

Who would have know that photographers playing with dead animals could ever be creepy?

So, not to lend too much credence to the theories of Ufologists; but isn't this more realistically evidence against the existence of a massive multinational UFO cover-up?

What does Ed Komarek think is the dynamic variable in this system that will change to allow powerful legal firms, that have existed for as long as

I can't image Russia spending the millions (maybe even billions) of dollars it would take to re-create the systems that NASA had to launch these: constructing the tower, building the infrastructure to re-fuel the SRB's, learning how to fly the shuttles, creating vehicles to recover the SRB's, on and on...

All to fly a

I hate comments like this. It completely ignores the fact that NASA's manned space flight isn't the only thing that NASA does. Science Mission Directorate has been keeping the science flowing consistently for years: Hubble, WMAP, Fermi, Kepler, Spitzer, the list of hugely successful science missions goes on and on.
