Perhaps you’re American and don’t realize just how much American media permeates every single fucking thing, even for those who do not live in the USA. I cannot go on Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, any news site, TV channels, Jez, etc. etc. without being confronted with American media and American news. It’s inescapable.
Maybe I’m an asshole for saying this but...
Freshmen are like what, 14? 14 yr olds should not be writing farewell letters/texts to their parents.
Because we do have gun control laws. But the key is that laws stop the lawful, so that only helps so much.
Why don’t courts put guys like this on suicide watch and make sure they don’t commit self-harm before being taken to prison?
Your statement demonstrates a clear misunderstanding of the use and construct of “safe spaces” and then goes on to give the very reason why they exist (hint: to give people space to process their experiences with trained and/or like-minded and/or like-experienced individuals who can facilitate that processing).
I find the whole “we can’t joke about what’s happening in the world with people getting offended!” line so disingenuous because there are countless comedians making a living joking about what happening in the world in a thoughtful way. What they really mean is “no one find ME and MY casual bigotry funny anymore, and…
I mean, honestly Twitter and other forms of social media reach far, far more people than TV news*. And that little blue checkmark is a quicker and easier way to verify a person’s identity than a phone call to a news station. This is our world now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But you can say whatever anti-semitic shit you want as long as you profess undying loyalty to Israel. That’s how Steve Bannon gets invited to speak at ZOA events and why Bibi Netanyahu’s son posts anti-semitic memes on Facebook.
I think a lot of it is though, there’s an institutional difference in power between those views - no one would be fired for criticising Palestinian based terrorists for killing children.
Oh, but don’t you know? It’s politically convenient for people to conflate anti-Israel sentiments with anti-semitism.
Hijabs are still representative of one of the worst forms of patriarchy on a global scale. No amount of good lighting and Photoshop can change that.
This is ridiculous. She didn’t say anything anti-semitic (which I’ve definitely seen some anti-Zionists do). It sounds like she was frustrated and pretty justifiably.
I’ve always thought it was profoundly insulting to veterans, also: acting like they’re too dumb to understand the concept that a peace protester not being against them personally.
The whole Hanoi Jane thing was a setup. She was a pretty naive peace protester who jumped at the opportunity to show the North Vietnamese as human beings who wanted peace as much as people in the US did. The North Vietnamese exploited this by cajoling her to pose on a anti-aircraft gun.
Hi there! It is actually pretty fitting to go after the pharmaceutical company when you know everything they did in order to bring millions to their knees due to addiction. They claimed it wasn’t habit-forming and poured millions of dollars into campaigns that touted that very important, untrue assertion. From the top…
Thank you! I know this is an unpopular opinion. Narcotics are essential for many people. It’s not like they’re new. These medications have been around a very long time and this current opioid crisis is a result from a lot of things, not just drug companies and doctors who prescribe them. I was addicted to heroin for 2…
Anytime anyone ever bemoans universal healthcare, I think of the opioid crisis that is destroying the United States. Countries with universal healthcare do not suffer comparatively with pain-medicine addiction. It is the direct result of a profit-driven industry lording over peoples bodies rather than an actual system…
So I know you probably mean well, but this kind of negative comment to something so powerful comes off as concern trolling of the highest order. Maybe don’t cheapen someone’s words by saying “Oh, I love it, but I hope others don’t use it to say a shitty thing I’m about to say.”
I can’t be bothered with her music (it bores me to tears) but this poem is so powerful. I will admit to having a new level of respect for her now.
