The consumer has the ability to not tip right now. Whether I say it’s shitty or not is irrelevant. You are proposing that every consumer pay more. How is that better for the consumer? Are you advocating for the consumer or the barista, or just arguing with any point I make for the sake of it?

It’s a problem of perception and competition. Why would a customer pay $5-6 for a latte at my shop when it’s $4 at another? Those who would scoff at the price are the same people who wouldn’t tip anyway, so they’ll go somewhere else and be cheap. My shop loses their business.

You don’t know me or my business, and have no ability to judge the ethics of either.

I’d like to point out that, unlike servers, baristas earn actual minimum wage (or more). I live in Austin, which has a pretty strong coffee shop culture, and I own a coffee shop. I don’t think tipping for drip coffee is really necessary, but not tipping for an espresso drink is pretty shitty.

I don’t think he actually has a military/intelligence background, but they just crafted a character who represents the most tactical kind of sociopath in our society...which maps pretty directly to military intelligence.

*shrug* I loaded AV Club and read the words in the headline and saw the accompanying photo. I didn’t read the article because the headline indicated to me that I shouldn’t.
