I'm not a programmer, but from what I know, creating a procedural, block-based, sandbox, exploration-type game is way different from a platformer game with pre-made maps and sprites for each character/object.
I dislike this piece of art. I wouldn't want to hang a print of it in my room. It's a Picasso. Just because you don't like something doesn't make it amateur or a ripoff. People have different tastes.
