Yeah, it used to be ridiculous for a long time. Basically the studios were forcing a large portion of their own risk onto the theaters. If a movie bombed and/or had no legs the theaters could quite literally make no money or take a loss from showing the movie. It was a broken system. 

That’s actually not the case anymore and hasn’t been for quite a while. That practice helped to drive some big theater chains into bankruptcy so they changed it. That’s why it was such a big deal that Disney was been strong arming theaters into giving them 65% of the opening weekend of The Last Jedi and Infinity War.…
