Definitely as a 'picks up where the series left off', tonally this makes sense, as the last we saw Agent Cooper was in a very dark place. Was surprised and delighted they completely ran with the idea of evil Coop as far as they did. Lynch is not playing it safe and that is exciting.
They could always just use the audio from the Access Hollywood tape.

I thought it was a wash. The villain was more interesting, and I liked the action better, but the story meandered way too much in the middle.
