I use talkatone on android. I text and call from it on a regular basis. I have unlimited text but I have minutes on my plan so the google+ integration is awesome. Texting from my laptop or cell is easy peasy.

I have an HTC Aria that I no longer use so I installed the app DailyRoads Voyager and mounted the phone above my rear view mirror. Works perfect for this application and was FREE.

At that age and mileage both of you should look into a timing belt and associated maintenance soon.

In Cali it can be mounted in the lower left or right hand corner of the windshield. Anywhere else is considered improper and will add to a ticket if your pulled over. Never seen nor heard of anyone being stopped for improper mounting alone.
