WHOSE RUF CRT3 IS THAT IN THE SECOND TO LAST PHOTO?!??!?! WHAT?!?!?!
The affordable Porsche of today, the canyon carver that runs with the 911, and that folks can still tinker with to their personal taste = 944. Mark my words, grab one now. Many variants and special models around. Can easily be built to outrun and outhandle a same era 911. Outsold the 911 of the same era. More…
I miss my 88 targa so much, now...
The words and photos gave me a smile. Thank you.
“Mata sold the original engine and upgraded to a 3-liter from a later SC and also sourced a local manual transmission.”
lucky guy buying when he did. What a perfect car, not so nice that you have to worry about the bumps and bruises that come from actually using it, but still pretty. I woulda kept the A/C though.
Drive it like you
stole built it
Great write up. I wish more of your pieces were on Jalopnik.
You do know the more you enjoy your job the less money they feel like they have to pay you to keep you showing up? What a great way to spend a Sunday.
I wonder if these things are any fun in stock or very mildly played with form. I’d love an air cooled 911 for a couple years to just figure out what it is people are talking about.
Never buy at peak.
E36 M3s with S54 swaps are the future outlaw builds (and half of the present track builds).
Great car. Great story. Great road. So happy I got to drive it relatively alone a few months back!
a couple years ago, I sold my e36 M3/4/5 with Turner stage 3 Plus and TC Kline suspension and bought a 996. I was lucky to find a one of one x51 package C2 with sport chassis, PSE, sport seats, badge delete and other options. With all due respect to the e36, the 996 is “that car today.”
God damn those photos are stunning. Perfect combination of car, colour and scenery!
Get a Boxster, Cayman or 996 before the bearded youths get wise.
1' “cheap” isn’t the word I’d use, considering that he’s done to it.
That’s some sweet photography! It pays to be out there at the right time of day, with that smog, smoke, filter, or whatever is causing that atmospheric effect.
i love driving up and down Angel Crest Highway, didn’t know they did meet ups at that restaurant on Sundays, will have to check it out
A shout-out to Dave at TRE. They do great work and a 3.6 built like this will really sing.
