great article, nice to read commentary on this film written by folks who are extremely knowledgeable in both comics and Black history.
Retcon? So I guess that makes everything alright then. All is forgiven...sorry about that pimp shit, black folks, our bad.
That was actually retconned that Sam was brainwashed to believe he was a pimp by the Red Skull.
I kinda hope Ross gets to say “They took my pants.” in the film.
I can’t wait.
1) I only clicked on the premiere website to watch the trailer for the 100th time. Watching the red carpet ceremony would have been overwhelming last night.
I tried SO HARD to forget this...
Oh yeah. Not trying to make excuses. They shouldn’t have made him a pimp in the first place.
Excellent as usual. Especially this:
He was a social worker who was revealed to be a brain washed pimp. They can retcon all they want but at one time, they were cool with the pimp origin
Thanks. Marvel has always been problematic AF when it came to black representation in the 616 that characters such as Isaiah Bradley have barely made a dent in making right.
When he debuted he was a social worker and not a pimp before he became a superhero. Glad they eventually retconned that retcon.
That was one of her points.
Good catch on the Falcon. The context of Marvel’s writing team is a side view into US race relation right during that period of time. Publishing black characters along mainstream characters was interesting.
I have always found it hilarious that Marvel purposely changed BP’s name to “Black Leopard” but, for years, having The Falcon’s origin of being a gang banging pimp
By far my favorite momment from Christopher Priest’s run of Black Panther is where Black Panther KO’s Mephisto, the Marvel Universe equivalent of the Satan, in one punch.
I see the resident rape apologist is out and already starred. Fantastic. Here’s why I don’t buy that men “don’t understand what’s going on with women”: because it’s bullshit. There have been multiple studies that have proven over and over again that men do understand body language and non-verbal cues, they just choose…
Thanks?! Lol, I hope my comment didn’t come off as building an excuse for the low level thinking some people in the black community have. I believe that black people or the afro diaspora is always morphing and changing and coming into our own. Due to the disruption / chaotic nature of what slavery and the further…
I think the Civil War Panther suit is Marvel’s Mona Lisa.
“Well, you better believe that Ruth E. Carter, a black woman, is responsible for the larger-than-life costumes we’ve seen in the previews thus far.”
