well except the EU was never officially the actual story. If you follow the rules of Star Wars canon that is. It's always been an off shoot sort of how the books are in Star Trek.

the difference is though Star Trek just created an alternate time line. With that the old Star Trek universe still has to exist otherwise Eric Banna can't go back in time to change things.

EU rules in Star Wars are very specific but yeah it will go away because with the new movie they will start making new EU books in that era and everything in the old post ROTJ Eu will contradict it so it will go away.

well the EU (at least post ROTJ) is going away soon enough with Episode 7.
