From what I can tell, the CCF filed a FOIA request for the docs — some were compiled by PETA and others (specifically the 2010 inspection data) were prepared by the VDACS. From the suit it looks like she's alleging that her sisters tore up bags of chai and poured the leaves all over her. It's not as painful as some of the other accusations but I included it because it seemed humiliating and bizarre.

So they're supposed to treat them with basic respect and dignity as they would any other detainee, but they don't always. And there are certain trans-specific issues — like housing trans detainees with their identified gender Read more

Good point. Above I was equating wage-gap concerns with financial worries in general, but TinyNinjas points out that that's not necessarily accurate: "I have the same concerns about the gender and wage gap that higher class women have, but honestly it's not as much of a primary focus because I am preoccupied with Read more

Totally agree that the issue of children is very important here. While single woman who are living in or near poverty may be more likely to have kids, they also don't have access to some of the expensive fertility treatments that upper-class women can get (and that get a lot of media coverage).
