I think the difference is that Abrams actually cared about the artistic side of moviemaking, not just the grabbing of cash. TFA is a palate cleanser, resetting the galaxy and re-establishing the mood for all the subsequent films. It wasn’t done to make money, it was done to make a good movie, which it plainly did.
