I'm sick of that type of thing too. I get why it should be a point of analysis, but in the context, I didn't see anything racist in her being in a cage (it was just stupid and pointless)

I knew about the racism behind using it as an insult, but I guess I just don't understand the type of internalized or, like you said, co-opted racist ideas that have seeped into different cultures.
