A lot of modern turbines rely on a simple phase change in water.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you capture a QR code and execute it (ie: hit the URL it's pointing to) later when you have better coverage? Like in the comfort of your own home when the kids aren't going to be wondering why you're entering a lot of info in your phone right in front of the toy they want?
Flip the lid over.
Make a general info app- USGS seismo reports, tornado warnings, solar flares, and, oh yeah, drone strikes too.
Black it all out and it could be a very kink-friendly platform... erm bed.
Sure, going to your LBS and getting them to assemble and install a generator system may work for some people. Or given us control freaks (former bike mechanic here), we can source the components and build it all ourselves.
I don't know, it seems like a reasonable compromise between a hub generator and a wheel/bottle dynamo. There is something to be said for keeping it all self contained (well, besides "they certainly made a lot of compromises.")
But if you know when someone was taking... interesting photos, all you have to do is change the time on your phone (yeah, I think you can override the network acquired time), go to that room and also take a photo. The app sees the metadata matches another set of photos and shares them with you.
With the larger image circle of either a DX or FF EF lens, you'd think someone could make a tilt-shift adaptor too.
Another few from off the top of my head: Moving from Motorola 680X0 processors to PowerPC, and from there to Intel.
