Your examples work in some situations, sure. If I were writing a formal paper, I'd probably use your first example. But Tom's usage is grammatically correct and certainly appropriate for a new article.

Using "they" as a singular pronoun is commonly accepted now. You used it perfectly appropriately. Wikipedia has a really comprehensive article about it.

The engine in the original Q45 is worth the price of this car. These things are muscle cars. Throw in the active suspension and this is a sweet ride. And for the price, you probably have enough room in the budget for a transmission swap.
