I subscribe to and read a lot of politics blogs. It’s a mix of centrist and leftist content, but it’s only lately that I’ve realized the leftist content is totally dominated by white male voices, i.e. those whose lives won’t become measurably worse under a Republican president.
A lot of working class whites are staunch conservatives because of the racism and bigotry, not the economic policies. That’s why Donald Trump, who has been advocating more populist economic policies and white nationalism, has been doing so well among working class whites.
David Frum offers a more nuanced and complete answer, but mine is pretty basic: the exchange between Christie and Rubio was so effective in tanking Rubio because it confirms the general perception of the latter as callow and untested.
