Are we meant to believe that this is the first time he has ever laid hands on her? Because that level of violence doesn't come out of nowhere.

I think that some of the fathers would attack with the same kinda sexist abuse that his kid did in the first place, may even worse. That is the mindset they are in. I think she is hoping the mothers would be more angry about her son's behavior.
